England and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
